Sustainable earth

Do you think how long can the earth survive? If you have bad feeling at it, you should figure out whether there are things that people can do to make a sustainable future. If we make some effort, we can make our earth much better than now. To make it organized, I divided as two part by the role of different subject. There are things that you can do as an individual and a government.

           As an individual, you can reduce using disposable things, such as dishes or spoons that are thrown away after using once. For example, use tumbler instead of disposable cup. It will not only make less garbage but also save papers that are used as paper cup. Also, you can use recycling goods or share things like clothes you cannot wear anymore with neighbors instead of throwing them away. One example of recycling goods is a bag made of milk pack. It benefits both one who buys it and environment.

           When it comes to government, it can also make environment sustainable by improving other natural energy. To be specific, there are natural energies like solar and wind. Try to think of activate those energies. Because there is not much gas and coal. Also, we need to stop relying on other countries, while thinking of a way to investigate natural energy; you should find solutions that can preserve extra remaining energy.

           In sum, there are still some solutions that we can do to make earth more sustainable. All people have the responsibility to save our earth for our next generations, no matter if you are individual or government. Just try to consider nature always and have thankful mind to earth.

Final reflection

           Now I finished all my class and I want to thank for all students and Professor Kyle as they helped me a lot. Especially, the students who are senior showed their passion to the class and that motivated me a lot. Also it was a great time meeting students who are in other major.

         Not only students but also the course was a good influence on me. Before this class, I did not run my own blog but had a dream to write my own post. So to me, posting in the blog was fun to do, even though when it comes to the grade, it was little bit pressure to me. By blogging, I could put my ideas into order and organized my thoughts. The most important thing is that by this, I was able to improve my English writing.

         Although this course was awesome, there were some drawbacks. It would be better if all the students participate in the class. To be more specific, I felt that some students had sullen and passive demeanors which harm other students’ attitude. I guess that if all the students had spoken a lot more, it would have been much better class.

         Even though there were some downsides, I really liked this class and it was awesome to be one of the students in this class. I hope meeting you in other class too. Also I wish you achieve your entire dream. Thanks a lot!

The importance of place in movie

          Have you ever seen the movie ‘International Market’? Busan is a very important element of the movie, because of the history based on Busan. The story is about a father who struggles to earn money for his family after the war. We can see the importance of place in movie by this 'International Market' movie as we see through the historical thing in Korean and the real market called Kkotbun's.

 

           As movie is about the Korean history, the main place is Busan. To be more specific, it is the story about the Korean War at 1960s. At past, people desperately went down to Busan which is located at south of Korea. Even though the movie shows Vietnam and Germany, it does not take a big role on the whole movie story. So it is reasonable to say that Busan is the main place. Imagine if the movie was taken in other place which is not Busan. Then the movie might not move our feeling that much.

 

           In movie, there is a market named ‘Kkotbun’s’. At there, the main character Hwang Jung Min’s wife sells needs and goods. Surprisingly, not only Busan but also that market is a real place. Only difference is just the name of the market. Since the movie got popular, the real market changed name as same as the one that was shown in the movie. By shooting film as realistic, it made audience feel more truthfully.

 

          If ‘International Market’ was being shot at another place, it could not make lots of audiences moving and crying. By filming it in Busan, it improved the quality of movie. It implies that the place that shot in the movie is really important. So from now on, when you watch any movie, try to focus on the role of the main place.

Online Or Offline Lecture?

              What do think of the classes that are full of online lectures? Will it be fun or boring? Many people might have experienced an online lecture. As technology develops, there are improvements in education, too. That is why you can listen to online lectures. Actually, Sungshin University offers some lectures that are offered online. Those lectures are so popular that they are always of full capacity. The popularity of online lectures might indicate that students can take all their classes online. Some of people may agree with it. However, it is a big mistake at thinking like that. As a matter of fact, generally it is impossible to take all the classes by online because of the limited environment of online which means that we cannot communicate well and absence of study management that means the feedback from teacher is often being late.

             First of all, the online classes should not be constituted as the whole class without any on-campus classes as there is limitation in online space. Think about when a student sits in front of computer and takes the online lectures. The student may not get focused easily on the lecture as there are lots of distractions. Eventually the student may get a low score on the test. So that part is the weakness of online lectures. As the situation of class is very limited, you just have to depend on the computer. What is important is that there is nobody that the student can ask for help or get stimulation especially by friends. To be more specific, when we take class on-campus, even though we get bored and want to be lazy, as there are fellow students who concentrate to the class, the student can get more concentration to class. By taking online lectures, we can hardly get the socialization which is really important in our lives. In some way, education and learning do not mean just acquiring some knowledge. The on-campus lectures help us enlarge the individual’s horizons, promoting a broader and more enlightened view of life. To add, as there are lots of students who can talk and discuss their opinion, any student who takes that class can broaden his or her view. The most important thing of on-campus lecture is that we can get a greater ability to think critically and make wise decisions using critical thinking skills obtained during class. Some people might say that why isn’t thinking critically possible at online class. Well, it may be possible in some way but as people can discuss their thinking more in on-campus class. So even though the technology develops a lot, it is not suitable such as listening to online lectures. To be more specific, it is necessary to study in class with fellow students and teacher.

             Moreover, online lectures lack the studying management which is significant at learning something. Studying management means things such as asking teacher and figuring out the questions. However, as online lectures are only focused at absorption of knowledge, students may not get a good management which is activated before, after during offline class. Some examples will help the understanding. Think of the situation when a student does not comprehend a question. If you are in class, it is easily possible to ask the teacher or a classmate and promote your understanding. But when it comes to online classes, that situation cannot happen. Even if you have a big problem at understanding and leave a message on the question board, you cannot gain the answer as quickly as in the on-campus class. Finishing a lecture without the perfect understanding will make you lose interest and be lazy, because not knowing perfectly about the lecture makes harder for you to reach broadens information. Also, it is difficult to evaluate the ability of students by tests, because students might cheat. Even though they know that those actions are dishonest, to get a nice score, some students will cheat on a test and finally that will cause students to have bad personality and become fiercely competitive, instead of being civil and responsible. For instance, when people are exposed to the cheating regularly, finally they might feel as like the cheating is not a bad thing. As tests are inevitable for learning, students should avoid online classes and accept on-campus classes.

             To sum up, there are downsides to taking online classes and two main reasons that have been mentioned. First, because of the limited place, it is hard to get motivated by friends and focus on the lecture. Secondly, as the online classes only focus on just learning not any discussion, there are some drawbacks such as being dishonest on tests or not completely understanding the lecture. Therefore, it is better to take all classes’ on-campus. Russo who is famous for philosophy said that “The purpose of education is not to make people who act like machine but to help one grow as a whole-person.” It is time to realize his ideal and make it by taking offline class. Even though Sungshin is not good at online lecture, if the school and students work this out together, there might be the good online environment.

           You may hear of many expressions that mean “I love you”. How is that possible? It is because of various languages. But unfortunately, nowadays there are disappearing languages. So I want to talk about this topic. Should there be one world language that everyone speaks? In my opinion, I do not think so. From now on, I will mention the counterargument which is about the good part of using one language. Then I will declare my opinion which is negative at this topic.

           Thinking simply, it may be good to use one language, because it can benefit convenience and does not cause conflict or misunderstanding. Especially, in UN discussion and debating session, by using one language people can communicate more easily. But do you think that using one language can benefit all?

           Language is same as culture. Think about if Korean disappears. None of people will agree with that. Because if our Korean language disappears, our culture will also be in a bad situation and that will cause vanishing. For example, not only the word such as Hanbok and Kimchi, but also many pure Korean names such as Sora which are not used as Chinese will be not used. That will make our life more difficult.

           To add, language itself maintains its own unique thing. So if we have many languages, it means that we can keep variety and diversity. When you think of your experience, this thing will be more understandable. Think of the time when you travel. One of the reasons that people enjoy travel is because of exotic atmosphere, which of them is influenced by different language. Also, if we have just one language to speak, our brain will not activate. Thankfully, as we have lots of language, we have chance to learn another language.

           Hence I argue that we should not use just one language. According to these reasons, there were three sectors; the counter-occasion when we use one language, seeing language important same as culture and maintaining variety. Therefore, we should maintain many various languages and try to keep that all.

Picture of a warm atmosphere

Seeing wonderful pictures make me happy and smile, so I love to go to art galleries and appreciate the pieces. My favorite one is ‘Dance in the Country’ which was painted by Auguste Renoir. Before talking about that picture, first it is proper to look into the artist Renoir. If you know about the life of the artist, you can figure out much better about the motive or reason why he painted it. After looking through the artist’s life, I will talk about the remarkable description of painting, reason why I like it and why I chose this painting.

Auguste Renoir was born in France at 1841 and his parents were poor. Therefore, he could not afford to go to school. Instead of studying there, he got a job at a pottery factory when he was 13. At there, whenever he had time, he went to The Louvre and saw lots of various artworks. That was the time that he dreamed about being an artist. When he turned 20, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts which is a school of fine arts. Even though he did not live in plenty, he always tried to draw and paint works with positive thoughts. His most famous quote is “Picture should be lovely, exciting, beautiful and pretty.” Like so, he painted the drawing that have bright and clear colors, having in mind about people who might see his pictures. Therefore, lots of his paintings are full of mild and warm-hearted characters and materials. He did not lose his passion for painting until he died in 1919.

Through checking Renoir’s life, now it is time to look at the ‘Dance in the Country’ painting. In the picture, there are two main characters who are dancing together. As the picture has warm tones and soft lines, it maximizes the beauty of the atmosphere which encompasses the whole picture. By clearly drawing outline of man and woman while drawing background vaguely, we can concentrate on the main couple who are dancing. As the title suggests, its background is the countryside. Taking a good look at it, you can see the tablecloth, some cups of coffee and straw hat. It demonstrates the happy spirit of everyday life in the countryside. When you look down at the left side, you can find a person’s face. Mainly, it seems like the dancing couple is in the center. As you pay attention to the woman’s face, you can notice that she feels so happy that even though her hat blew off to the ground, she could not recognize her hat missing, because she feels so romantic about dancing with the man. But if you try to look at that in a different way, you may focus on a girl who was painted at the bottom of the left side. Doesn’t the girl look like she is staring at the man secretly? It means that the girl has a secret crush on the man who is dancing with another woman.

Whenever I look this painting, I really feel the urge to go inside the painting and enjoy atmosphere with them. The reason I picked this painting as my favorite one is because of its color effect. As the colors that are used in it are so warm, bright and smooth that it helps me relax. Also, I adore this painting because of the girl who was drawn down there. It is interesting that the artist try to saw the girl who secretly loves the man.

Like this, I mentioned the painting that I love most. By explaining his life and describing the painting, we can enjoy it much better. By admiring this drawing, it gave me lots of thoughts about love and people’s feeling. I think that Renior not only painted the picture well but also described people’s feeling such as drawing the girl at the left-side bottom who likes the man secretly. Also, as I see the picture, it makes me feel warm and soft. I consider that feeling is associated with the reason why people like to appreciate the drawing. To add, as we search the life of an artist and appreciate the main factors of painting, we can know much more about the painting. 

Invention of medicine

It’s great to win a Nobel Prize, since it is verified as the one of the excellent prize. So, today, I will talk about the winner of Nobel Prize in physiology this year. Her name is Youyou Tu and she is Chinese. She won this prize because she invented the medicine that is against Malaria. By seeing how she invented the medicine and how it contributed the world, we can know the greatness of her invention.

 Before figuring out how she won this prize, we should look at the procedure of her invention. She discovered and invented the drug against malaria and other parasitic diseases. As malaria affected many people’s death, she struggled out to solve this problem. As she was the expert on traditional oriental medicine, she focused on it. After studying and searching for the solution, finally she discovered an active ingredient called artemisinin form sweet wormwood. Then she knew that artemisinin can cure for malaria. To enhance the solution, she invented substance which is called as dihydroartemisinin. This substance can be synthesized chemically. So, she combined it with the other substance that is piperaquinone. The medicine that is used as cure for malaria is the combined one. 

The medicine that she invented was remarkable to the world. Because it was the first time that Chinese won the Nobel Prize. I think that Youyou Tu struggled so hard that finally she won it. The notable thing is that she grafted two varieties together which are western medicine and oriental medicine. Excepting all the other great invention, there is a reason that she won the Nobel Prize. As many amazing scientist try to find the medicine which can cure malaria, they were not able to make it. But Youyou Tu did not give up and just try and try to figure out.

Because of her incredible medicine, we can now cure malaria and save lots of life. I suppose that as Chinese won the Nobel Prize; we Korean can get one someday if we try hard. It is such a brilliant work to invent some necessary one. It is much better when it comes to the life. By talking about invention of medicine, I come up with thought that science is inevitable thing that we cannot bring down.

Geotourism about Yang-Gu

In these days, as the environment becomes more important thing, the world is paying attention to it. So the tourism is inclined to geotourism. In Korea, there are many places that take care of the natural environment. Picking one of them, I chose Yang-Gu which is located in Gangwondo. There are two most important effects of geotourism. First, it does not ruin the nature. Second, it can develop the community. The possible effects of geotourism in Yang-Gu include the nature that can be preserved and the good influence on that society.

 

           One possible effect of geotourism in Yang-Gu is that we can keep the nature as it is. To be more specific, as Yang-Gu is full of beautiful scenery, people don’t have to create some artificial place or thing. For example, there is DMZ Wildlife Eco Center which displays the DMZ place where people cannot reach. So without going into that DMZ place, people can know about the life of wild animals.

 

           Another possible effect of geotourism in Yang-Gu is the enhancement of society. In consideration of food, Yang-Gu can promote its local specialty such as dried radish greens. Actually, there is the festival opened in May annually. It can advance not only society but also tourism like Dutayeon Valley. It is placed on the way to Geumgangsan, and also the program ‘1 night and 2 days’ took film at this place. So it made that place more popular.

 

         There is a saying “Killing two birds with one stone.” Like this, Yang-Gu has good influence towards the nature and community. it means that by tourism, the city or town can earn money and advertise its place.

<The Urban Visionary>

In these days, lots of countries became urbanization. Urbanization means that majority of people live in city. And that city is called as megacity. The urban planner Richard Wurman was curious about why people live in city intensively. So he investigated many cities and founded a project called 19.20.21. This project contain meanings that on 19 cities that are regarded as being more than 20 million people in 21st century. He did not just focus on one city but many other cities, because it is important to look at the relationship between cities. For example, he looked at Paris which is very fascinating city to all over the world. Like this, he investigated other ten largest countries too. Then he figured out whether the city can prosper everlastingly. The answer is no. because the idea that seems perfect is just for that moment. Furthermore, he searched the cities that are ruined because of architects, such as Bilbao. But even though it does not look entirely wonderful, it may help improve the fabric of the city.

Hello, my name is SOO JIN PARK and my major is English literature. It is nice to meet all of you. Actually, I am 22 years old because I used to attend another university before here. But I don’t want you to feel difficult at getting closer. My favorite hobby is watching movies. Through watching movies, it makes me think a lot and put myself in another’s place. The genre I like the most is the drama and the one that I hate most is the horror. After watching movies, I enjoy writing reviews about the movies. As I like seeing and watching, I am working at the school newspaper. As a result, I have a dream which is being a journalist. Because I am fond of meeting various people and talking with them, I consider that I can be a good journalist. To talk more, I can make people reveal their concerns, which mean I might form the comfortable atmosphere. Also, I fancy writing thoughts so that it will help me improve my writing ability. The reason I take this class is to advance my English ability. In addition, by speaking English with professor and students, I hope that I can express myself in good English without stammering. Furthermore, when it comes to the end of this class, I desire to get familiar with all of the classmates. Once again, it is a pleasure to meet all of you.
